Art Wiper - Baseball Coach - '62-'71 & '82-'83

Art started his career at Roosevelt not as a teacher and coach, but as a student and student athlete (football and baseball). Following graduation Art continued his academic and athletic career (football) at the University of Washington.

Art served his high school alma mater for 33 years as a PE teacher, guidance counselor, coach and Athletic Director. While at Roosevelt Art coached football, swimming and baseball.

Art spent four years ('62-'66) as an assistant to long time Head Baseball Coach Don Harney, before taking over the reigns of the program in 1967. During Art's tenure as Head Coach the Riders won several Metro League North Division titles and a Metro League Title ('68).

Art's most memorable experience as the Riders coach came against West Seattle in the 1968 Metro League Championship game at Sicks Stadium. Both Roosevelt's pitcher, Bob Nelson, and West Seattle's pitcher tossed no-hitters through nine innings in the most intense and exciting game Art ever experienced. Roosevelt cracked the game open in the 10th to win the championship 3-0. Nelson ended up pitching a 10 inning no-hitter.

Tom Ostrom's no-hitter in 1970 was another memorable highlight for Art.

Art's players helped stock the rosters of numerous college and professional programs. During Art's tenure as Head Coach the Riders sent players to Washington, Washington State, Central Washington, Stanford and Seattle U. Though he never had a player make "The Big Show", numerous players did play at various levels of the minor leagues.

Today the school's athletic field is named Art Wiper Field in recognition of the many contributions Art made to Roosevelt during his long career at the school.
